I am obsessed with heist narratives, and approached this show with trepidation. A heist done poorly on screen is painful to watch. The first episode did not quell these fears and I found some of the initial exposition to be dry. However, I am pleased to report that Frauds quickly hit its stride and ultimately delivered on everything I wanted: good humour, an ambitious theft, and endearing characters.
Performances from the ensemble cast are fantastic, delivering tenderness and grit in equal measure. While I did guess a couple of the key twists toward the end of the series, there were other unanticipated surprises which provided delight.
The idyllic Spanish setting is a character in and of itself, and provides a warming balance to some sadder elements of the narrative.
While I do wish the series had featured more delectable cuisine, it didn’t leave much more to be desired. This show is great if you’re in the mood for a buddy-style adventure, and it will make you want to call your best friend.
